When you ask for a currency quote, the first useful question is not only “What is the rate?” It is “What kind of transaction is this rate for?” A cash exchange at a Newmarket branch and an international money transfer solve different problems. They can involve different currencies, settlement methods, operating costs, timelines and compliance checks. As a result, two legitimate quotes may not be identical even when they are requested minutes apart.

In a cash exchange, physical banknotes change hands. The provider must source, count, verify, store and transport those notes. Neither method is automatically “better.” Cash may suit a traveller who needs banknotes. A transfer may suit a payment to a recipient abroad. The correct comparison starts with the customer’s actual purpose.

Compare the final result, not the headline rate

Ask for a complete, time-stamped quote using the same send amount. For cash, confirm:

whether you are buying or selling the foreign currency;
the exact amount and denominations available;
any separate service charge;
the total Canadian-dollar amount you pay or receive; and
how long the quote can be honoured.

For a transfer, confirm:

the amount you send and the currency the recipient receives;
the applied exchange rate and all disclosed fees;
whether an intermediary or receiving institution may deduct a charge;
the estimated delivery time; and
the expected amount delivered to the recipient.

A simple comparison table helps. Record the same starting amount, every disclosed cost and the final outcome. Do not compare a cash “sell” rate with a transfer “buy” rate, or a CAD-to-USD quote with a CAD-to-another-currency route. Those are different transactions.

Why a public reference rate may look different

The Bank of Canada publishes daily exchange rates for information and statistical purposes. It describes them as indicative rates—not rates at which consumers can necessarily transact—and normally posts them once each business day by 16:30 Eastern Time.[2] A live branch or transfer quote can therefore differ from the Bank’s page because it is executable, time-sensitive and specific to the service requested.

The direction of the transaction matters too. “Buying USD” usually means the customer buys U.S. dollars from the exchange. “Selling USD” means the customer gives U.S. dollars to the exchange and receives Canadian dollars. State the direction in plain language before evaluating the number.

Suppose a customer wants the equivalent of CAD 2,000. One option is physical foreign cash for travel; the other is a transfer to a relative’s bank account. Even if both begin with CAD 2,000, the customer is purchasing a different service and receiving a different outcome.

The useful questions are: How much foreign cash will I leave with? Or, how much will the recipient receive, in what currency, and when? That framing prevents a visually attractive rate from hiding a fee, a deduction or a mismatch in transaction type.

A rate is meaningful only when it is attached to a method, direction, amount and time. Ask for the final cash amount or final recipient amount, request a breakdown of disclosed charges, and keep the quote or receipt.
