A smooth international money transfer is mostly decided before you reach the counter. The transfers that stall usually share the same story: a name spelled from memory, a missing account detail, or a question about documents that could have been answered with one phone call the day before.
Gather recipient details
Accurate recipient information reduces delays. Bring the correct spelling of names and complete account details. The receiving name should match the recipient's bank record exactly — a nickname or shortened form can hold a transfer for days. Depending on the destination, you may need an account number or IBAN, the receiving bank's name and branch, and sometimes a code such as SWIFT/BIC. Have a phone number for the recipient too; the fastest fix for a stuck international money transfer is often a quick question they can answer.
Documents and timing on your side
Bring valid photo identification, and for larger amounts expect routine questions about the source of funds — the same regulated process described in what identification is needed for currency exchange. Ask about timing before you send: destination country, receiving bank, and local holidays all affect arrival. If the money must land by a specific date, say so at the start and plan one buffer day.
The full cost of an international money transfer
Ask two numbers: the total you pay here, and the amount the recipient receives there. The gap between them contains the rate and every fee on the route. Details of the service are on our international money transfer page.
